Blogging at 4am

Submitted by jbearer on Sun, 03/09/2008 - 08:31.

It wouldn't be a newborn if we werent both up at at 4am with a cranky baby would it?

Friday Night into Saturday Morning was another good night, Allison slept 4.5 hours between feedings and we both had decent amounts of sleep.

Heather woke up Saturday Morning with her spinal headache mostly gone. We had plans to go to the hopital that morning to get the Blood Patch if she woke up and still had the spinal headache.

All day Friday and Saturday Allison had watery stool, what looked like diarrhea to me. While I dont think I'm going to be a worrysone father I didn't want to let the diarhea go on and cause dehydration. So I called the pediatrician at 9pm their answering service had a person from Children's Hospital call us back and she was very helpful describing what we needed to look for to make sre the baby was not getting dehydrated. So I guess you can chalk up your first over worried dad moment of Allison's young life.

Starting Saturday Evening Allison became very hungry, she was wanting fed every hour for 8 hours. I went online to see what might cause a baby to be that hungry. I quickly found pages about Hungry Baby and Lactose Overload.

This was comforting because Allison had nearly all of the symptoms of Lactose Overload. Everything except for green stool. The article also goes on to say that a baby will find that feeding temporarily relieves the bloating and cramping that they are having so they want to feed frequently. But in reality the more frequent feeding contributes to the cycle and causes more Lactose to move through the intestine more frequently which just adds to the cycle of Lactose Overload.

This is not the same as Lactose Intolerance and does not indicate that the baby will have any problems digesting lactose when she is older.

Well the baby has calmed down so I'm going to wrap up this post. I'll try to add more tomorrow, I'll leave with this thought: How did parents raise babies before having the wealth of information that is on the internet? I couldn't imagine looking in books to findi the info I did about Lactose Overload at 3 am on a Saturday which will allow me to sleep well tonight, or at least that is what I now plan to do.

And by the way, happy Spring Forward to Daylight Savings Time. In a sick way it's good for us, one less hour that the baby could keep us up tonight :)
