Day One

Submitted by heather on Tue, 03/04/2008 - 15:31.

Since the baby was a week late, the doctors scheduled us for induction. We arrived at the hospital at 6 pm Sunday March 2nd, after check-in we were taken to the labor and delivery room. It was a slow night both in the emergency room and in the delivery rooms. I was able to get one of the newly remodled delivery rooms which is quite nice. They gave me medicine to soften the cervix which will help with labor when they induce in the morning. I was dilated at 3 cm when we arrived. I watched some TV and waited for morning.

At 5 am they woke us to take a show and to get ready for labor. At 6 am they started the Pitocin which really got things started. By 8:30 we were getting an epidural. The epidural was not fun, it took two tries, two different doctors and took over an hour. By the time that was in, I only got a half hour of rest before the pressure to push came on. The pressure was really bad and I dont think the nurses believed me at first. They kept telling me to wait and to let the baby come on it's own but the pressure was really bad. Finally they examined my cervix and found that I was fully dialated. The last few centimeters happend really fast. The nurses had me start pushing before Dr. McGuire came in at 12:30. Jeff was there to hold my one leg to help me while I pushed, He had a front row seat of the delivery. It was around 12:30 when I started pushing and Allison was born at 12:52. She weighed 8 lbs. 5 oz. and was 22" long.

After only 22 minutes of pushing. Wow what a feeling when she was delivered, first the relief felt like 100lbs came out. Second, the excitement, wow couldn't believe she was actually here in my arms. She was perfect head to toe. All those worries went away. I was a mother.

After being weighed and cleaned, Jeff tooks lots of pics and company began to arrive. Grandma Mcguire was the first to arrive followed by Grandma Bearer, Krissy and Kevin. About 2:30 we tried breastfeeding. The first 3 tries didnt work but at about 8:30 pm she latched on and we have been doing good with it ever since. She is feeding about every 3 hours.
