Daddy's First Experiences

Submitted by jbearer on Wed, 03/05/2008 - 22:32.

Hey everyone, Proud Daddy here, Things have been pretty cool and crazy this far. I hope that you have been enjoying the photos from the hospital so far. Isn't she just the cutest and smartest baby ever born? Ok, so maybe I'm a little biased but I still think I'm on to something. It's currently Day 3 and we just got home from the hospital a little over an hour ago. Our second day and night went rather well and was more or less run of the mill for a 1 day old baby. For the first 24 hours we had to have Allison's blood sugar checked before Heather could feed the baby. It was much more convenient just to feed her when she needed it. My laptop blew up yesterday and would freeze up every 5-10 minutes. Talk about bad timing, I'm in a hospital with little to do and my tool to post this content goes on the fritz. It seemed to be the memory and I didn't have the tools to open up the memory. Turns out that re-seating the memory has cleared up the problem. (hopefully) Everything is cool so far, nursing is the hardest part. But Heather is doing a good job trying to get the process started. Delivery I talked a little in the special Craft Beer Radio episode a little about the experiance of child birth. but I didn't get the whole way into it. The birth was intense. Heather was miserable during labor, and quickly losing faith in her ability to deliver a child. She needed some coaching during the pushing part and even with her doubts she did a wonderful job. She only had to push for about 20 minutes. As for my experience, I was holding Heathers left leg up and her hand helping coach her. I had imagined that would be located back by her shoulder and wouldn't see the delivery first hand. Well that wasn't so. from the first time you could see a small spot of the baby's head I had a front row seat. It took 4 series of pushes or so to get the head out. That was a bit freaky. first off, the head was a lot bigger than I had anticipated. Even when I saw the top of the head I was expecting something th size of a softball, not a grapefruit. But now this head is out, it's not moving, it's purple, and the doctor reaches in and unwraps the umbilical cord from around the baby's neck. While I didn't think something was wrong. I had always thought that after the head was out that the shoulders and the rest of the baby easily came out. So you can imagine my surprise when the Doctor grabs onto the baby's neck and pulls like she's pulling on a rope with a 50 pound weight on the end of it. I'm sure the rest of this all happened in a matter of seconds but it seems like a long stressful couple of minutes to me. Purple lifeless baby head sticking out of my wife. Doctor grabbing onto the neck and pulling on it. Heather pushing out the rest of the baby. Doctor suctioning the nose and mouth. Purple still body. doctor wiping over the baby, and I'm like, ok, so when does the baby animate? Lets go. Wake up kiddo. And finally the baby wakes up. I can't recall if it was before the baby was breathing, or after but This is when I'm washed over with emotion like never before. That's my baby. I was really close to crying from joy. I think this is when that new part of my brain turned on like Greg mentioned in the show. Heather actually reminded me to grab the camera and this is when I got those 2 great shots of the baby with cord going to Mommy and being wiped off by the Doctor. After that everything was by the book. Checkout The hospital stay was great except for Heathers bad Epidural. Doctors say the baby is perfect. which is always great for a parent to hear. It too way too long and was a bit on the annoying side with all the nurses and waiting on the OB doctor to release Heather. First Poopy Diaper -- Disaster So after we got home Heather went upstairs to take a nap, I was in charge of Allison for the first time. No big deal she was sleeping and in her swing. The slowest speed seemed too fast for a new born she seemed to be getting agitated so I turned it of and rocked it by hand. She slept the entire time till feeding time so I woke her up and was going to take her to Heathe for feeding. I checked the diaper and she needed a changing, I figured I'd try it on my own. I was doing great until she spit up. Allison was on her back and coughing a bit, The bottom was clean and I was about to put a diaper on. I didn't know when how much was too much coughing so I tilted her to her side so she could clear her throat. Then she decided to pee and poop on the changing pad. I wipe up the mess. get a diaper thinking that I can still win this one. Then she starts coughing and pooping at the same time. So now I'm worried about choking and making a bigger mess. I called in the pro and Heather helped me get things back under control. Score: Allison 1 Daddy 0.

Allison is beautiful. Does your face hurt yet? I bet you can't stop smiling, at least I couldn't when we had Austan.
